Is it possible for one to make an effective stethoscope by themselves? If so, how?

My cousin is doing a project at Uni and she asked me whether i knew if there was a way to do this. Is there and what do you need to do to make a stethoscope?Cheers
Answer:
Material needed
(2) buttons About the size of a nickle
12" mono-filament fishing line
(1) paper cup about 6 to 8 OZS
Attach a button to one end of the line
Make a very small hole in the bottom of the cup.
Slip the free end of the line through the hole
Tie the 2nd button to the end.
With 2 fingers pull the line taunt and place it over the heart, place the cup over the ear and listen.
Good luck,
a simple cardboard ear trumpet is better than nothing, but obvioulsy won't be as good ad a Litmanns !
not easy to make a high quality one. much cheaper to get one on the market. in india you can get one for as little as one or two dollars. on ebay , it is cheap as well.
2 metres of garden hose.
1 coconut, halved in two and scraped out.
1 miniature coffee cup saucer.
1 tube of superglue.
Halve the hosepipe and glue one end to each of the coconut shells. Glue the remaining 2 free ends to the saucer and - Hey Presto. A stethoscope fit for those times your stranded in the jungle..!
If I recall correctly, the stethoscope was invented by Laennec. I think he had a skilled carpenter turn a short tube on a lathe, with a small trumpet bell on one end and an earpiece on the other. Then he drilled a hole through the center.
